Ordinary Days

E Chapman

Most of us have times of high excitement and joy or high stress and anxiety in our lives; hopefully, we don’t spend all of our time swinging from one extreme to another because we want to be able to savor the great moments and get through the not so great as quickly as possible. While it is easy to connect joy with great ritual experiences and the potential use of magick to alleviate the negative experiences, there are often stretches of perfectly ordinary days in between (hopefully) for most of us. When we are stuck in the negative times, it is easy to long for the ordinary days where things flow smoothly most of the time and we establish mundane routines that encourage sameness. We also cannot exist for long periods of time feeling like magick is all that we need. However, it is during these ordinary days that it takes real work to remember the existence and importance of magick in our lives. It isn’t the spectaculars or the disasters that truly grow our practice; it is the day to day reminders and small magickal pieces that we create for ourselves that allow us to work on becoming truly balanced people who are better able to return to their true centers after an experience of one extreme of life or the other. It takes time, patience, and skill to successfully manage both parts of ourselves, the mundane and the magickal, through the ordinary days where we may not feel we need the magick. It takes little things like lighting a candle the first thing in the morning and setting our intent, using small spells to make the mundane a little bit easier to manage, studying an aspect of our practice, or even meditating regularly. These little things add up to true and lasting spiritual growth and an appreciation for our own choices.
