Immanent and Transcendent Divine

E Chapman

There are Witches who feel that we are all Divine, and as such, their spiritual practices reflect that internal focus that manifests this belief. There are others who believe that the Divine are Gods and Goddesses from a particular pantheon whose worship has proscribed practices, specific devotions, or festivals to perform or that there is an unnamed God and Goddess pair that is revered.

We, on the other hand, after much discussion over way too many cups of coffee and often late into the night after a ritual have reached certain “conclusions” about our personal concepts regarding the Divine. The Divine, for us, is both Immanent and Transcendent as they are defined.

Transcendent can be defined as extending beyond the limits of ordinary experience or being beyond comprehension. This is what we consider the Divine of the Universe to be; we cannot hope to know this Divine or understand how it creates or what it chooses to do because our understanding is limited by the fact that we are human beings whose spiritual experiences may be powerful but are constrained by our humanity.

On the other hand, we also believe the Divine is Immanent within each of us.

Immanent can be defined as near to or about to be experienced. We feel that we all have a spark of the Divine of the Universe inside our souls which longs to connect to that external Divine; that longing spark may explain why there are so many individual spiritual paths throughout our world. After all, we are made of the same elements as the stars themselves, so we are connected somehow to the Universe out there.

Remember, however, that these are the personal views of the authors and that your conception of the Divine must be developed on your own.
