Common Tools of the Craft : The Cauldron

E Chapman

There are a number of common tools associated with the practice of Witchcraft. Some believe that the only effective ones are those you make yourself while others feel they must be freely given to you; whatever way you choose to collect them, you need to go with your gut and choose something that speaks to you individually. However, no tool is truly necessary for you to practice your Craft; you are the magick. Tools can enhance what you are trying to do just like any other correspondence you may have for a particular purpose.

In the practice of Witchcraft, a Cauldron is a cast-iron pot, often with three legs, that can also be used as a symbol of the Goddess on the altar, or in the West to represent water. It can be used as a holder for candles or incense or as a place to burn various items during spellwork or as part of a devotion. The Celtic myths include tales of the God Dagda who carried a magickal cauldron that was an endless source of nourishment while Bran had a cauldron that was able to regenerate people who had died in battle. Most famous though is the Cauldron of Cerridwen, that symbolizes the mystery of death and rebirth.

Cauldrons are available in all shapes and sizes and while some people feel it is necessary to have one as part of their practice, others do not. While it is also associated with the Element of Water, there is no relationship with any particular Tarot suit.
