Common Tools of the Craft : A Wand
There are a number of common tools associated with the practice of Witchcraft. Some believe that the only effective ones are those you make yourself or are freely given to you. Whatever way you choose to collect them, you need to go with your gut and choose something that speaks to you individually. However, no tool is truly necessary for you to practice your craft because you are the magick! Tools can enhance what you are trying to do just like any other correspondence you may have for a particular purpose.
In the practice of Witchcraft, a wand is a tool that is used to direct in a spell or working. There are many tools that can be used for this purpose, including your own hand/finger!
Wands come in all kinds of materials from stone or crystal to wood or even bundled herbs. Consider using a hand full of wheat stalks to direct your Autumnal energy! When buying or creating your wand, think about the attributes of the material and what you will be using it for. If you are considering using a wand made of wood, you might want to research the magickal associations for different types of trees and choose accordingly. The same is true for wands made of stone or crystal.
The wand is considered one of the four elemental tools used on a Wiccan altar. It is placed in the South, and is associated with the element of Fire which corresponds to personal will and passions ( not necessarily romantic ones but things that matter most). It relates to the Suit of Staves or Wands in a Tarot deck.
Note, some practitioners associate it with the Element of Air instead because they associate the Athame with Fire. It’s all a matter of personal preference
