Common Tools of the Craft: A Pentacle
There are a number of common tools associated with the practice of Witchcraft. Some believe that the only effective ones are those you make yourself while others feel they must be freely given to you; whatever way you choose to collect them, you need to go with your gut and choose something that speaks to you individually. However, no tool is truly necessary for you to practice your Craft; you are the magick. Tools can enhance what you are trying to do just like any other correspondence you may have for a particular purpose.
In the practice of Witchcraft, a Pentacle has a fancy definition which is a talisman or magical object, typically disk-shaped, which is usually inscribed with a pentagram or five-pointed star. Some people relate each of the points to one of the Four Physical Elements and the Element of Spirit. People often place important magickal items on top of it on their altar. It is considered one of the four Elemental tools of Wiccan traditions as we well as a number of other magickal practices. We don’t personally use one, but it is associated with the Element of Earth which corresponds to grounding and balancing.
Many practitioners choose to make their own by painting or burning the symbol onto a round piece of wood or clay. People also tend to wear the symbol as a piece of jewelry to denote their personal beliefs and practices. In 2007, the Armed Forces finally began to allow it to be placed on the tombstones of soldiers who were Pagan. It relates to the Suit of Pentacles, also known as Coins, in a Tarot deck.
