Broom Closet
Witches have been thought of as different or strange or too powerful throughout history. People and religious institutions do not deal well with those who are not like them in general. Over the centuries, this has led to persecution and even death for practitioners around the world; in many countries, there are still laws making the practice of Witchcraft illegal.
Being in the Broom Closet is a modern term (borrowed from the LGBTQ community and adapted) for individuals who choose not to let others know they ae engaged in the religion or practice of Witchcraft, however you choose to define it. It is a matter of personal choice if or when you choose to disclose your spirituality to others. There are many levels of disclosure available to you in terms of coming out of the Broom Closet.
It is often easier to start sharing with one or two close friends and maybe some family members first.
A suggestion: if you are going to disclose is to check your own motives first. If your reason for disclosing is to shock or upset then maybe you need to think about why you feel you should be doing this. It is not anyone else’s business what your personal spiritual/religious practices may be, especially when it comes to your employment. It might be beneficial for you to be able to work holidays where more people want the day off because of their religions and then request a vacation day or two in order to celebrate your own if you choose to do so.
There are many blessings and pitfalls when discussing religion and/or politics with others. It is all about what you are comfortable disclosing and also taking the time to consider the potential reactions you may receive and how you will feel about those as well.
