Affordable Witchcraft

E Chapman

Many of us buy into the notion that we have to have to best, the brightest, the most expensive tools and spell ingredients because we think it is going to make our rituals and spells more successful or make us better Witches somehow. We are here to tell you that’s not the truth; you can practice magick and ritual with absolutely nothing and still have everything turn out the way you want it to because you are the magick itself and not some sparkly wand or fancy chalice. Tools and spellwork items are the bells and whistles of your practice; they are fun to play with, but they are not really needed to accomplish what you want.

They can enhance through engaging more of your senses, but they have to have personal meaning for you to be an effective addition. The important thing to keep in mind is that anything you use as an enhancement works much more effectively if you have established some sort of personal connection. For some, making their own things and figuring out what each component should be works well. For those of us who aren’t as interested in making or don’t have the time needed to create what they want, seeking out cost-effective items can provide that personal connection.

Check out any thrift stores in your area; they can be wonderful sources for all sorts of chalice-like glasses, candleholders, bowls, trays, or anything else you come across, not to mention all sorts of interesting bottles and other “witchy” containers to store things in. Today, leaving less of a footprint on our planet is more important than ever and finding items to reuse or repurpose fulfills this well. Other great sources for items include your local dollar or big box stores; they often have inexpensive items that work wonderfully for your purposes. For example, you could purchase a wine glass at the dollar store and then decorate it with beads, shells, ribbons, paint, or anything else you can think of not only personalizes a potential tool but connects you to it as well.
